Super Bowl 2019

America’ s most watched sporting event of the calendar year will be taking to our screens and the field on the 3rd of February 2019. Over 110 million viewers will tune in to the Super Bowl LIII, where two teams will fight it out to get their hands on the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

The home of the event will be the Mercedes-Benz-Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, where a crowd of 71,000 will take their seats and witness the Super Bowl action, where one club will write themselves in the history books. As the stadium was only opened in August 2017, the Super Bowl LIII will be its first piece of NFL action – not a bad first time.

As the annual championship game of the NFL, the Super Bowl LIII is expected to attract spectators from all over the world, with fans already putting in travel arrangements for the globally recognised event. The day itself  has notoriously become recognised as an ‘unofficial national holiday’ amongst Americans and you can be part of the action.

The Favourites

The Super Bowl is always an unpredictable but entertaining event and picking a winner is never an easy task. Over the last 10 years, there have been nine separate winners and the Super Bowl LIII is being tipped to be another close affair.

Leading the odds, as current favourites, are the Los Angeles Rams. Having started the season in strong form, boasting a 100% win record by week six, the Rams continue to look like a rejuvenated side, ever since Sean McVay’s arrival last year. After losing in the playoffs last season, the Mob Squad will be searching for vengeance and they certainly look well equipped to gear up for a Championship charge.

Another team that has possessed a 100% win record by week six are the Kansas City Chiefs. Following last season’s AFC West title victory, Andy Reid’s side finds themselves amongst the favourites for the Super Bowl LIII. However, after losing their wild-card game during a tense affair against the Tennessee Titans 22-21, the curse continues to surround the Arrowhead Stadium. Last season’s defeat was their sixth consecutive home playoff loss, much to the agony of the Chief’s loyal following. Can they break the unwanted spell this season?

Last year’s runners-up, New England Patriots, inevitably find themselves being tipped as one of the frontrunners for the Super Bowl 2019 trophy. Despite a slow start to the season, you can never rule The Pats out of contention, as they do hold the second most Super Bowl wins in the sport’s history. Tying with the 49ers and the Cowboys with 6 victories apiece, the New England Patriots will be channelling last year’s pain to drive forward this time around. There are no other head coaches that hold the same level of experience as Bill Belichick and the American continues his hunt to add a 6th Super Bowl to his illustrious trophy cabinet.

The defending champions the Philadelphia Eagles are also in contention, they have started the new season with a spring in their step. After their first-ever Super Bowl championship, Doug Pederson’s team were welcomed to a hero’s reception by their home fans and the fairy-tale continues to be written. Can lightning strike twice for The Birds?

The year of the underdog?

The Eagles’ historic victory really was a true underdog story. Given the special and unique feature of the event, every active team always holds a feel of belief in winning, as the game has held some magical moments in the past. Will the Super Bowl 2019 hold a surprise this time around?

Amongst some of the outsiders are both Jacksonville Jaguars and the Minnesota Vikings, two clubs who have never tasted Super Bowl success.  Under Doug Marrone, the Jaguars have seriously upped their game over the last twelve months and claimed their first-ever AFC South title last season. If their momentum continues to escalate, the Jags will be considered as the dark horses this year.

After winning the NFC North for the second time in three years last season, The Vikes were however crushed by eventual winners Philadelphia Eagles 38-7 during the playoffs. Under Mile Zimmer, The Purple People Eaters continue to function as a hard-hitting side and the American will be desperate to add a second Super Bowl to his list of accomplishments.

Another side that has been thrown into the mix is the New Orleans Saints, who haven’t won the trophy since 2009. After their NFC South win last season, The Dome Patrol will have high expectations this year but it will be a tough task to trump their fellow contenders.
